Malik Bendjelloul dies suddenly

Malik Bendjelloul was the director of the Oscar-winning documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’.  He has died suddenly in Sweden at age 36.  His family has now confirmed that he committed suicide following a bout of depression.

‘Seaching for Sugar Man’ won many awards which included an Oscar in 2014 for Best Documentary Film.  It follows the search by two South Africans journalists for Sixto Rodriguez who they initially believed dead.  In South Africa Rodriguez was an extremely popular folk icon (on par with Elvis as discussed in the film) while he lived and worked as a labourer in Detroit completely unaware of his fame in that country.

It’s so sad to see someone so talented and driven fall to this level of despair.
